Rejuvenate Your Energy: A Guide to Holistic Fall Wellness Practices
If you’re the kind of person who thrives in the summer, you’re not alone. Warm weather, longer days, and nothing but clear blue skies really makes it feel like the living is easy. But when autumn rolls around, there can be a lot to look forward to as well. Even though we wave goodbye to a few of our favorite aspects of the summer, there’s gentle, mindful ways to spend your cooler months, joyfully.
Energy Healing
Modern science has proven that everything is made up of energy, from your floorboards to the hair on your head. It’s no wonder, then, that we can heal each other with our energy. Used as a complementary addition in many hospitals, energy healing is the practice of removing or altering stress from the body by touch or non-touch. “The goal is to support the body to achieve balance and realign your energy to find healing.” Energy healing can include techniques such as reiki, massage, or yoga and tai chi. These techniques can help with anxiety, stress, depression, and overall well being. If you’ve never tried reiki, it’s when a practitioner floats their hands above your body and channels energy from theirs to yours. Many people have said it helped them breathe better, have less nausea, and have better moods, in general.
Move your Body
Moving your body is a great way to not only stay fit, but stay mentally healthy as well. Unlike other workouts that move at rapid speeds with trainers who press for more and more and more, yoga uses gentle and calculated movements of the body that focuses on breathing, balance, and mindfulness. This ancient practice helps with strengthening the body, calming the mind, improving sleep, flexibility, and heart health. There’s nothing wrong with exercise focused on weight loss or changing your body, however, yoga helps you to appreciate the body you have right this moment.
Be Mindful
If you’re looking to strengthen your mind as well as your body, practicing mindfulness can have profound impacts on your mood and health. Most people think of meditation as the way to become more mindful, and while that works amazingly, some can never warm up to it. For those who prefer other methods, mindfulness can come in many flavors.
Mindfulness is being aware of the present, paying attention to what’s around you, and letting that internal chatter melt away for a while. Mindful walking is a great place to start, and you don’t have to hike a mile, you can walk to the bathroom or the kitchen, or from your car to the office. Pay attention to the motion of your legs, the press of your feet against the pavement or carpet or grass, smell the air, hear the hum of the fridge and just be. A “new” trend is silent walking, which means walking without distraction. Can you remember the last time you did that? No podcasts or music, social media or texting, just walking, breathing, and moving. Free from distractions, your mind can sort through some thoughts, and maybe even settle down a little.
If walking isn’t an option for you right now, try mindful eating. It sounds silly at first, but think of all the distractions you have during a meal; television, phones, books, newspapers, even pets can zap your attention. Try eating one meal alone and just eat. Paying attention to the sensory experiences will help you appreciate the moment, the food, and the time it takes to nourish your body.
Start your fall season anew with practices that will make you feel rejuvenated, healthy, and ready to move in the direction you’d like to go.
