The History of The Strawberry Moon

The Strawberry Moon will dazzle our skies on June 14th, 2022. This year, we’re doubly lucky, as it will also be a supermoon. As we prepare for an abundance of moonlight, let’s pause to consider the origins of The Strawberry Moon and what it means for spiritual wellness.

History of the Strawberry Moon

The name “Strawberry Moon” was first used by multiple native North American tribes, including the Anishnaabe, Cherokee, Potawatomi, Shawnee, and Sioux, to signify the moon between spring and summer. These tribes looked for something universal to refer to that occurred during this time of the year. In early June, long runners of strawberries prosper in much of the country, so they dubbed the full moon in June “Strawberry Moon.”

Preparing for Summer

In certain parts of the world, residents brace for oncoming heat waves. Other geographic locations see a more subtle shift in temperature during the summer. That said, the start of summer can represent something bigger to students, seasonal employees, and parents of small children. For some, summer means a huge shift in everyday routine. Many parents feel the pressure to plan the perfect summer for their children because the prospect of so much unstructured time together can feel daunting. For those feeling the gravity of a bigger shift in their lives during the summer, the Strawberry Moon can represent a moment of pause to take in this impending change.

Spiritual Wellness

Experts recommend using the time surrounding the Strawberry Moon to journal and consider feelings. As your environment makes the change from a softer spring to a harsher summer, it may be a good vantage point to reflect on harsh truths and accept them as reality. A moon journal can help guide you through the process of reflection. Like all full moons, the upcoming Strawberry Moon is a time to reap what you sowed during the previous new moon and to say thank you to the world around you.

Gardening by the moon works in a literal sense, too. This ancient practice helps you become more attuned to the seasons and the world around you. If you have a green thumb, you may find yourself enjoying the fruits of your labor during the full moon.

Love Connections

The Strawberry Moon has also been referred to as the Honey Moon as early as the 1500s in Europe. Early written traditions point to the idea that June is the “sweetest month.” This may be where the term “honeymoon” first came from as a reference to a time when the climate is favorable, both in relationships and weather-wise. For this reason, June is an especially important time to nurture your relationships with all your loved ones.
